Usage Rights Calculator
Usage rights define what a brand can do with your content — and they're usually the biggest single lever on your price. Learn how each right moves the number, then price them into a quote.
Here's the counterintuitive truth about UGC: the hardest and most underpaid part is rarely the filming. It's the usage rights — how broadly the brand gets to use what you made, and for how long. Two creators film the same video and get wildly different pay because one granted paid-ad rights in perpetuity and the other granted organic-only for a month.
The rights that move your price
Organic usage
The brand can post your content to their own channels without paid promotion. This is the baseline — it's included by default in most quotes.
Paid-ad usage
The brand can spend money promoting the content on ads platforms. Because the brand extracts real revenue potential, paid-ad rights command a meaningful premium over organic-only.
Duration
How long the brand can use the content: 30 days, 90 days, 6 months, a year, or perpetuity. Longer windows are worth more; perpetual usage is the most expensive tier.
Whitelisting / Spark Ads
The brand runs ads through your handle and access. This adds a flat whitelisting fee on top of your creative fee.
Exclusivity
You agree not to work with competing brands (or in the category) for a period. Exclusivity narrows your other opportunities, so it has a cost.
Additional add-ons
Raw footage delivery and extra revisions are separate rights/work items that should each be accounted for, not folded silently into one number.
Why rights are your best negotiation argument
When a brand asks for "a couple of videos for $X", they're often quietly asking for a lot of rights at the same time. Turning that into an itemized list — base creative fee, then paid ads, duration, whitelisting, exclusivity — makes it concrete. You're no longer arguing about a vibe; you're pricing each thing they want.
This is also where most creators leave money on the table. They quote only the creative work and forget to price the rights. A usage-rights line item can be the difference between a modest deal and a strong one.
Use the calculator to see how turning on paid-ad usage or stretching the duration changes your low / target / high range before you ever send a reply.
Once you have a range, use the negotiation scripts to raise the usage-rights conversation professionally.
